How to Verify Automotive Parts Compatibility
A step-by-step process for confirming fitment before ordering: VIN, OE numbers, production dates and physical comparison.
Fitment errors are the most common reason for returns in the parts trade. A short verification routine prevents most of them.
1. Start with the VIN
The VIN identifies the exact build of the vehicle. Use it in the manufacturer's parts catalog to get the correct OE number.
2. Check production date ranges
Manufacturers change parts mid-model-year. Note the production month, not only the model year.
3. Compare OE numbers, not photos
Two parts that look identical in photos can differ in bushing size, connector type or calibration. Match on the OE number and treat images as a secondary check.
4. Compare physical details
For chassis parts, check mounting points and ball joint sizes. For electrical parts, check connector shape and pin count. For AC parts, check port positions and fittings.
5. Confirm with your supplier
Send the OE number, vehicle details and photos, and ask the supplier to confirm the match in writing before shipment.
