How to Source Automotive Parts for Wholesale Distribution
A practical checklist for importers and distributors building a parts range: demand, identification, samples, packaging and logistics.
Wholesale distribution depends on carrying the right parts for the vehicles in your market, at a consistent quality, with predictable supply. A structured approach reduces dead stock and returns.
1. Start from your vehicle parc
List the most common makes, models and powertrains in your market. Prioritise parts with steady replacement demand for those vehicles rather than chasing a wide but shallow range.
2. Build your list around part numbers
Send suppliers a structured list: OE or model code, description, application and target quantity. A spreadsheet is far faster to quote than a list of photos.
3. Order samples first
Evaluate fit, finish and packaging with a small sample order before committing to volume. Test samples in real vehicles where possible.
4. Agree on packaging and labelling
Clarify carton labelling, part-number marking and protective packaging — especially for heavy assemblies like engines and transmissions, which need crating.
5. Plan logistics early
Confirm shipping method, Incoterms and the documents your customs broker needs. Consolidating several categories into one shipment can reduce per-unit freight costs.
6. Keep feedback flowing
Share installation feedback and any return reasons with your supplier. This is how a supply relationship improves over time.
